Scholarship to Obtain Commercial Drivers License Established, Accepting Applications
(August 28, 2016) - For over 40 years, Jeffrey Downes, a native of Southington, drove commercial trucks. He loved his work and truly had a passion for driving. When he passed away in March 2015, after a long and courageous battle against cancer, his family established the Jeffrey Downes Memorial Truck Driving Scholarship Fund at Main Street Community Foundation to honor his memory and his devotion to driving.
“My father loved ‘seeing the world through his window’ and our family is thrilled to be able to assist individuals who want to do the same,” said Justin Downes, Jeffrey’s son.
The Jeffrey Downes Memorial Truck Driving Scholarship Fund will award a $500 scholarship to an individual pursuing a commercial driver’s license at an accredited training school. Individuals from Bristol, Burlington, Harwinton, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington and Wolcott may be eligible to apply.
“There are so many opportunities for individuals with a CDL, because our entire economy depends on them,” said Justin. “Obtaining a CDL opens doors, and allows students to be career ready immediately.”
The first Jeffrey Downes Memorial Truck Driving Scholarship will be awarded in 2016 and applications are being accepted through September 30, 2016.
