This scholarship fund was established in 2024 in memory of Philip “Randy” Doucette by his family. “Coach” as he was affectionately known, was highly accomplished with the Plainville High School (PHS) swim team where he earned the CIAC Connecticut Boys Swimming Coach of the Year in 2009, and was later inducted into the Plainville High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
FUNDS
Established in early 2006 by Conn Acoustics President Peter LeBlanc to assist employees with post-secondary education costs for their dependents. Future funding for this award will be provided by both management and employees of Conn Acoustics, a private company that has provided interior design and construction work in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts for over 50 years.
This fund was established by the friends and family of Dave Lepore to honor his life, work and community commitment after Dave’s passing in 2003. The scholarship will support a Bristol resident who wishes to pursue a career in journalism.
This scholarship fund was established in 2018 to honor the memory of Dave Mongillo, a lifelong Southington resident and member of the Southington Weed Wackers Golf League. Dave was often referred to as the King of Concrete, dedicating most of his life to his own foundation business. He was highly regarded in the industry as a master craftsman know for his work ethic, quality and attention to detail. The scholarship is available to a graduating high school senior from Southington High School who is a current student athlete; preference will be given to those who are on the golf team.
This scholarship fund was established by David “Dave” Bourassa’s family to honor his memory and impact on the many people he knew and loved with his kind and fun-loving spirit. Dave was a master electrician for over 35 years, and he was known for his infectious smile and strong work ethic. Scholarships will be awarded annually to residents of Bristol, CT who are graduating seniors or currently enrolled students pursuing post-secondary education or career training, with a preference for students looking to pursue an education and/or career in the mental health field.
This fund was established in 1961 through a bequest from Dora Schubert and was transferred to Main Street Community Foundation in 2017. Dora’s desire was to establish a named scholarship to defray the expenses of education for deserving students. She was a longtime Plymouth resident and member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Terryville. A scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating senior of Terryville High School with a preference to children of members of the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Terryville.
Dorothy Dewey Picard was a graduate of The Julliard School and was a well-known area music instructor for 64 years. In addition, she played in many area orchestras and was a founding member of the Bristol Symphony Orchestra. Upon her death in 1999, her daughter, Marcia White, established this scholarship to honor her mother’s lifelong love of music.
This fund was established in 2009 with a gift from Ralph and Linda Roland in memory of their late son. This scholarship provides financial assistance to applicants entering a career training program that does not exceed two years and provides the step up needed to gain employment.
Established in 2007 by Elizabeth I. Matt, a retired nurse, to assist students who need financial assistance to pursue education in the medical field. Mrs. Matt is most interested in support to students who have shown academic commitment as well as a true interest and passion for some area of the clinical medical profession.
Ervin E. Trask had given his entire adult life to the advancement of educational opportunities for all youth. He was born in Maine in 1899, but passed away in Plainville in 1956 at the age of 56. He was the superintendent of Plainville Community Schools for 15 years, and was the director of state basketball tournaments for 25 years with the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference. Ervin, “an outstanding example of leadership in education,” was well-loved and well-respected; May 25, 1955 was deemed “Mr. Trask Day” to honor his 35th anniversary in the field of education.
This scholarship was established in 2004 by the children of Walter and Estelle Peterson at the request of their father. Estelle was the first police woman in Terryville and served as the town’s public health nurse for many years. The Petersons moved to Terryville after meeting during World War II when Walter was recuperating from a head wound and Estelle was the nurse.This scholarship will be given to a senior from Terryville High School interested in pursuing a career in nursing or a health-care related field.
This fund was established in 2015 by the friends of Eva Brodowicz Wickwire to honor her memory and all that she stood for. Before she passed away in April 2015 at the age of 53, Eva was the Chief Development Officer at Bristol Hospital where she was closely involved with the volunteers. An annual scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a career in the health care field.
The Evan J. Chyun Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2022 and honors the memory of Evan J. Chyun who passed away four days before his 40th birthday on May 29, 2022 following a tragic automobile accident. Evan was a passionate advocate for social justice especially racial and gender equality. A champion for people often ignored or mistreated by the system, he worked as a public defender striving to make the world a better place for all.
This scholarship was transferred to the Main Street Community Foundation in 2015 by GE’s Industrial Solutions in Plainville. Since that time, GE’s Industrial Solutions was acquired by ABB Industrial Solutions, and subsequently relocated to Bloomfield, CT. Scholarships will be awarded annually to eligible dependents of ABB Electrification’s North America Product Development Center in Bloomfield, CT.
Grace and Norma Joy’s nieces, Eileen Moylan, Lorry Belanger, and Donna Ricci wanted to honor the memory of two women who would have excelled in college if given the opportunity. Both Grace and Norma were lifelong residents of Bristol. Grace was an outstanding financial manager who utilized those skills for over 45 years at Marlin Rockwell of Plainville. Upon her retirement, she brought her remarkable accounting talents to the TRW Credit Union in Plainville.
The Jake Gilbert Memorial Culinary Arts Scholarship Fund was established by the Robert Rosenheim Foundation to honor the memory of Jake Gilbert. Jake studied Culinary Arts at Johnson & Wales University, and this scholarship not only honors his legacy but will help inspire other culinary students who have the same passion that Jake had for food.
This fund was established in 2011 through a bequest from Elizabeth M. Tyrrell in honor of her husband, Jay W. Tyrrell. This fund provides scholarships to assist individuals from the greater Bristol area in pursuit of higher education in the field of art.
Established in 2024 by Jeffrey’s wife, Jessica Pieri, in loving memory of Jeffrey C. Holdsworth. Jeffrey passed away in April of 2024 at the age of 37 due to complications from cancer. Jeff had a love of sports that began at an early age and carried on throughout his life. Jeff worked as a Senior Software Engineer at ESPN, dedicating his talents to enhancing the sports viewing experience for millions. Throughout his illustrious twelve-year career, he earned six Emmy Awards for his outstanding contributions, a testament to his talent and innovation during his tenure at ESPN.
For over 40 years, Jeffrey Downes drove commercial trucks, he loved his work, and truly had a passion for driving. This scholarship fund was established by his family to honor his memory upon his passing in 2015, after a hard fought battle with cancer. A scholarship will be awarded annually to an individual residing in Bristol, Burlington, Harwinton, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington or Wolcott to provide financial assistance towards obtaining skilled training as a commercial driver or other skilled trade with preference given to those applicants seeking a commercial driver license (CDL).
This fund was established in 2013 in memory of Jill Lynne Shackett, a beloved teacher at South Side School in Bristol who passed away unexpectedly at the young age of 35. This scholarship will provide assistance to students pursuing post secondary education at a four-year college or university with a major in education. The student must have a passion for teaching and the desire to become an elementary or secondary education teacher. Preference will be given to students who attended school in Bristol particularly at South Side School or Bristol Eastern High School.
